3D design in the classroom: a starter guide
Running 3D design with a class of thirty in a 45-minute period, on school laptops, with one printer or none at all.
The common reason 3D design fails in a classroom is not the software. It is that one printer cannot serve thirty children in a period, so the lesson becomes a queue. Planning around that from the start changes everything.
Separate designing from printing
Designing is the lesson. Printing is a slow, noisy thing that happens afterwards, usually not in front of the class. Thirty children can design in one period. One printer can produce perhaps six small objects overnight. Treat printing as homework the machine does, and choose a handful of designs per week — rotated, so everybody's turn comes.
A class with no printer at all still gets most of the value. Measuring, designing to a constraint, and defending a decision are the transferable skills. The plastic is the reward, not the lesson.
What to check before the first period
- Open the tool on an actual school laptop, on the school network. Filtering and old graphics drivers are the two things that break a plan.
- Check whether pupils can save files locally, and where those files land.
- Decide the account position in advance: whether pupils sign in at all, and who owns any account that exists.
- Try the whole first activity yourself, start to finish, timing it. Halve what you think a class can do.
A first period that works
- Ten minutes: everyone puts one shape on the plate and sets it to exact millimetres. No exceptions, including the fast finishers.
- Fifteen minutes: add a second shape and join it. Now they have made something that was not in the menu.
- Ten minutes: a constraint. Nothing over 60 mm; must sit flat; must be one piece.
- Ten minutes: three pupils explain a decision they made and why. This is the part that turns it into a design lesson rather than a software lesson.
Constraints beat free choice
"Make anything" produces either a cube or paralysis. "Make something that holds three pencils, fits on this shelf, and prints in under an hour" produces thirty different answers and something to talk about. Constraints are also how the subject is actually practised.
Safety and supervision
The design tool is safe. The printer is a hot machine: the nozzle runs above 200°C and the bed can be hot enough to burn. Keep printing away from unsupervised pupils, ventilate the room, and remove prints yourself or with close supervision. Snapping supports off sends small hard fragments flying — eye protection is not excessive.
